    Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre
    Traces the town�s rich railway and coal mining history. Changes chronicles 100 years through voices and photos of 28 longtime residents. Mounted buffalo Bud arrives Feb as a preview to A Sense of Place (opens Oct)--human habitation and land development. Also displays of vintage climbing, backcountry skiing and mountain photography equipment, as well as tributes to the 1988 Winter Olympic Games (partially hosted by Canmore). The Geoscience area explores the formation of the Rockies, the Devonian reef and the origins of Canmore coal. Gift, book and educational toy shop. Geoscience library.     Banff Park Museum National Historic Site
    Western Canada’s oldest natural history museum. The elegant 1903 building is a showpiece of architecture and natural history interpretation. Banff’s mammals, birds and insects are preserved in authentic Victorian style—displays date back to 1860. There are knowledgeable interpreters, a reading room and hands-on discovery room.     Jasper Yellowhead Museum & Archives
    The permanent Historical Gallery displays the human and natural history of Jasper National Park. Outfitting, parks heritage and tourism are primary themes. Exhibits include guide Curly Phillips’ hand-built cedar strip canoe, beaded deerskin jacket worn by Metis rights advocate Suzette Swift and the ‘silver’ ice axe lost during the first ascent of Mt Alberta in 1925 and recovered in two pieces in 1948 and 1965. Art shows, family video area, book and gift shops, archives and meeting room. $4, $3 stu/sen, $10 families, free under 6 and members. Discount for groups 10+.     Northwest Mounted Police Barracks
    A Provincial Historic Site, the 1892 barracks was built as a response to the bootlegging ways of early Canmore residents. Inside the mud-chinked log structure are furnishings, artifacts and a tearoom, while out back is a small garden. Sat-Sun 1-4 pm; June-Aug Wed-Sun 10 am-6 pm and Mon-Tues 1-4 pm, depending on volunteer availability. Donations.

    Cave & Basin National Historic Site
    The birthplace of Canada’s national park system. Exhibits, guided tours and the film Steam, Schemes & National Dreams recount how the discovery of the Cave and Basin springs led to the creation of Banff National Park, Canada’s first. See the Cave & Basin springs, replica 1887 bathhouse and grand bathing pavilion. Interpretive boardwalk trails (free) skirt the warm marsh, where you can discover the original cave opening and unique flora and fauna. $4, sen $3.50, 6-16 $2, family $10, includes a guided walk (11 am, daily in summer and Sat/Sun in winter).     Lake Louise Sightseeing Gondola Wildlife Interpretation Centre at the top of the lift hosts wildlife exhibits with an emphasis on grizzly bears and natural landscape. Programs include: 30-min interpretive presentations every hour on the half hour 9:30 am-5:30 pm (free). 45-min guided walks hourly on the half hour 9:30 am-4:30 pm ($5). 2 hour guided hikes 10:30 am and 1:30 pm ($7).     Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies
    Experience and learn about the art, culture, and the human and natural history of the Canadian Rockies--enjoy the four galleries, archive and library, heritage homes, shops, guided walks and tours. Free Museo Funatic Packs have activities to help kids 5-12 explore the museum. The museum was founded in 1968 by artists, philanthropists and world travellers Peter and Catharine Whyte. He was a member of one of Banff's pioneer families, and she was from a distinguished Massachusetts family. They met at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art in 1927, at a time when Canadian landscape painting was undergoing change. They married, made Banff their home and painted the grandeur of their beloved mountains. Daily 10 am-5 pm (closed Xmas and New Years). $6, sen/stu $3.50, -7 free, families (2 adults, 2 children) $15.

    Buffalo Nations Museum
    Recalls when Native people followed the buffalo herds into the Bow Valley, hauling their belongings by travois. Displays interpret clothing, hunting techniques, legends and myths, and historical Banff Indian Days. The museum displays a wealth of native arts and a slice of daily life including richly ornamented costumes, a beautifully decorated teepee, colourful quill work and historical hunting equipment. It is a cultural display that celebrates the richness, diversity, continuity and, above all the resilience of the First Nations people. Life-sized scenes depict daily living and ceremonies.
