B & Bs in Alberta's Rockies

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Alberta's Rockies, Alberta.
The most dramatic scenery on earth took millions of years to create. Wind and water have carved out the towering mountains, winding valleys and deep grottoes of Alberta's Rocky Mountains. Sports enthusiasts and tourists are drawn to this unspoiled natural paradise all year round.

Visitors can explore three national parks and numerous provincial parks for relaxation and recreation, all of them situated on the border Alberta shares with its neighbouring province, British Columbia.

The hospitality of this region is best enjoyed by staying at a bed and breakfast. From isolated wilderness retreats to charming riverside cottages and provincial mountain chalets, bed and breakfasts add a personal touch to any travel experience. Guests can look forward to comfortable rooms, a common area to gather in and a hearty mountain breakfast each morning. Hosts are relaxed, friendly and keen to share their knowledge of the local area.

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK

Waterton Lakes National Park is a majestic mountain hideaway tucked away in the southern corner of Alberta, along the Canadian-American border. Its accessible location, pristine beauty and wealth of natural attractions make Waterton a popular destination. There are plenty of opportunities for low-key activities like walking, birdwatching and wildlife viewing as well as more exhilarating adventures such as hiking, climbing, biking and rafting for all skill levels. All of these adventures can be enjoyed while staying at the Rocky Ridge Country Lodge Mountain View, situated just 15 minutes east of the park. Guests at this charming lodge can choose from rooms or cabins well suited to families and large groups. Hosts offer a complete breakfast menu; choose from light choices like oatmeal and parfaits or hearty meals that include omelettes, crepes, waffles and pancakes.

KANANASKIS COUNTRY

Kananaskis Country is west of Calgary, along the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). This large and expansive landscape encompasses provincial parks, wildlife reserves and the communities of Kananaskis Village, Dead Man's Flats and the town of Canmore.

Dead Man's Flats is a small hamlet with a very unusual name that springs from the legend of two brothers whose relationship met a violent end. However, the name and associated legend is in stark contrast to the peaceful surroundings of the area. Staying in Dead Man's Flats is a nice, low-budget alternative to accommodation in the surrounding resort towns. There are several bed and breakfasts here, including the Kiska Inn, an affordable alpine chalet with six rustic guest rooms decorated in traditional mountain style.

Canmore is a small town, friendly to pedestrian traffic. There are numerous walking and hiking trails weaving through the townsite, making it possible to choose accommodation that feels secluded but is still close to downtown. The Cedar Springs Bed and Breakfast is an award-winning luxury property in a serene location just a short walk from Main Street. This chalet-style lodge has spectacular mountain views and a three-course breakfast menu. Visitors keen on spending time outdoors may choose to stay on the sunny side, where the sun sets later in the day. Both the Creekside Country Inn and the Bear and Bison Canadian Country Inn are beautiful mountain cabin-style bed and breakfasts at the base of Lady MacDonald Mountain in the Benchlands. This quiet, secluded area is far away from the trains, the highway and bustle of town. Both lodgings are beautifully situated; guests can relax by the fireplace while enjoying the magnificent panoramic views or step onto the many walking, hiking and biking trails in the area.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK

Heading a few minutes west from Canmore, the Trans-Canada Highway enters the gates of Banff National Park, then winds through the Bow Valley to the town of Banff and the village of Lake Louise.

Banff is a popular international destination, especially for honeymooners. The natural beauty of this area combined with world-class amenities keep the wide streets of this mountain paradise packed with visitors year round. Travellers find a wealth of accommodation choices, including plenty of bed and breakfasts.

Over 30 bed and breakfasts are sprinkled throughout Banff, but it is well worth staying close to downtown. The Treetops Bed and Breakfast is just a few minutes walk to boutique stores, gourmet restaurants and eclectic galleries on Banff Avenue. It has a spacious living room, dining area and balcony with a beautiful view of Cascade Mountain. Both the Banff Avenue Bed and Breakfast and A Good Nite's Rest Bed and Breakfast boast queen-size beds and private bathrooms. After a lavish breakfast it is easy to walk downtown, find a hiking trail or catch a ski shuttle.

JASPER NATIONAL PARK

The Icefields Parkway continues northwest through the Rockies to Jasper National Park. The town of Jasper lies within the park, while Hinton and Grande Cache are just a few minutes outside of the park boundary.

Travellers come to Jasper for the never-ending scenery, exceptional sporting opportunities and wealth of accommodations. A bed and breakfast is an ideal place from which to explore this region. The most luxurious bed and breakfast in Jasper is the Wyndswept Bed and Breakfast. The hosts of this lodge are keen to educate visitors about the ecology of the area, giving guests advice about viewing wildlife, exploring the mountainous landscape and hiking through the dense forests.

Hinton has endless recreational opportunities, enabled by its position outside of the national park where motorized sporting activities are not allowed. Explore the terrain on an ATV or snowmobile or scout out one of the many multi-use trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. The Eaton Drive Bed and Breakfast is an intimate Hinton property with just two suites, each equipped with a private entrance, queen-sized bed and private bath. Both this accommodation and the Suite Dreams Bed and Breakfast offer an array of amenities.

Grande Cache is tucked away in the northern region of Alberta's Rockies. This small town has amazing natural beauty and a colourful history well worth exploring. The Mount Hamell Bed and Breakfast is an ideal base for an adventure. This small home accommodates a single party at a time, ensuring guest are well looked after. Willmore Wilderness Park is close by, giving enthusiasts an opportunity to ride the wild rivers, hike meandering trails or take in the natural beauty on horseback.
